Understanding which disinfectants are effective against the virus that causes COVID-19 disease is vital at this time.

NATIONAL POST, March 31, 2020: Zoonotic pathogens, like the coronavirus causing COVID-19, are infectious microorganisms that can spread between humans and animals. These pathogens present concerns for disease outbreaks, since previously-unknown viruses have the potential to jump from wildlife into the human population with little or no warning. Although most strains of coronavirus only cause the common cold, two particular stains have been responsible for more severe diseases prior to the identification of COVID-19: severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS-CoV) in 2002-2003 and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS-CoV), first reported in 2012.

“Our competition is not brands, it is legacy chemistries, chemicals that have been used for decades, sometimes 50, 60 years that have remained unchanged. All the while the bugs are mutating but the chemicals stayed the same. So it’s not terribly difficult to disinfect a surface. It’s difficult to disinfect a surface without hurting the surface or the person doing it and the environment post use.

…If you take a look at SARS from 2003 and you take a look at where we are today there’s been a number of mini outbreaks in between there. So you had MERS in the Middle East. Again, another virus transmitted from an animal. And then in between there you’ve had community outbreaks of MRSA, VRE, the infection prevention experts call it the bug of the week club. They do not expect that this is the end. This is just possibly the new norm. All of this activity will make people more prepared, more aware, and you’re gonna see different procedures, processes put in place in terms of state of readiness.”

In late 2019, an outbreak of respiratory illness in Wuhan, China was identified.  It is now understood that this outbreak is associated with a Novel Coronavirus that is now identified as COVID-19.  Coronaviruses are of significant concern owing to the fact they are zoonotic in nature, meaning they can infect humans and animals1.  Prior to the identification of COVID-19, there were six (6) strains of Coronavirus capable of infecting humans with only two (2) strains capable of causing severe disease; severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS-CoV) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS-CoV)1.

Virox Farm Disinfectants Effective Against African Swine Fever (ASF)

African Swine Fever (ASF) is a highly contagious viral disease that has been effecting the domestic and wild pig populations across Europe, China and Southeast Asia. Sadly, ASF has been devastating the pork industry in these countries, as there is no treatment or vaccine for this disease. In anticipating the potential for an outbreak to strike in North America, which would have a significant economic impact on the pork industry, our company tested our farm and barn disinfectant brands, Intervention®, Prevail™, and Intervención™ against this pathogen. Our disinfectant technology, Accelerated Hydrogen Peroxide® (AHP®) proved to be effective against this devastating pathogen.

As stated by Dr. José A. Ramirez, PhD, Executive Vice President & Lead Science Advisor of our company, “Our AHP technology has been proven to be highly virucidal against both enveloped and non-enveloped viruses. We were confident both Intervention, Prevail, and Intervención would be effective against ASF, but having direct confirmation gives us and our customer’s reassurance.”

Our company is committed to improving the biosecurity and infection prevention needs of a number of industries with a powerful yet safe disinfectant technology – Accelerated Hydrogen Peroxide. To learn more about how our technology was tested against this pathogen, click here.

Rescue My Shelter Contest

Virox Animal Health gives back to the Animal Shelter community! In August of 2017, our Animal Health team launched their ‘Rescue My Shelter’ contest where individuals involved in the Animal Shelter community had the chance to nominate a shelter in need of disinfectant products to protect their facilities from outbreaks. The program ran to August 31, 2018, and within this time period the contest had 2200 nominations and 26 shelters were chosen as winners. This year the Animal Health team re-launched the shelter program, and are selecting two Animal shelters per month to win a Rescue™ My Shelter Starter Kit.
